Information Technology is an important piece of your university experience. This document outlines the basics of what Information Technology Services (ITS) can do for you. We want you to know what services are available to you and how we can help you with your technology needs during your time here at Shawnee State University. Each of these technology services are briefly explained below. Some are broken down in more detail in their own section of this document. A laptop or tablet is an important tool for most university students to bring to campus. Students can access SSUnet, the Shawnee State wireless network, in classrooms and study spaces with either a laptop or a variety of mobile devices. To ensure that students are successful in connecting to SSUnet we suggest the following.
If you will be living in Student Housing and plan to bring a Game Console, you will need to check with your RA about how to connect to the Student Housing network.
It is simple to connect your laptop, mobile phone, tablet, or other device to SSUnet, the campus wireless network. All registered students can access SSUnet with their SSU Network Account.
You are now connected to SSUnet and you will be able to roam campus while keeping your Wi-Fi connection. After an extended period of inactivity or if you leave campus, you will need to repeat these steps to reconnect to SSUnet.
Wi-Fi connectivity in the campus housing units is supplied by Time Warner Cable and therefore SSUnet connectivity is not extended into these areas. You will lose connectivity to SSUnet and will need to follow the steps to reconnect to SSUnet if you roam to the housing units and return to main campus.
As a Shawnee State University student, you have three different accounts that you need to access the various resources available to you. The following is a quick overview of these three accounts, Your Network account, MySSU account, and @MyMail.
What is this account? This account will allow you to log onto all university owned computers in the library and the computer labs. You will also use it to access SSUnet, the Wi-Fi network, from your smart phone or laptop.
When is this created? The network account is created when you attend Orientation or register for classes, whichever event occurs first.
What is my username? Your username is your last name + first name initial @shawnee.edu. For example, Teresa Smith will be email@example.com.
What is my password? Your initial one-time password will be shared via official communications from Shawnee State University. You will be prompted to change this password when you use this account for the first time.
Will the account be removed? If you are not enrolled for the current semester, your network account will be removed and all information saved within the account will be lost.
What is this account? This account is used to access SSU's Student Portal. The MySSU account also gives you access to the Blackboard website which may be used in some of your classes. MySSU can be found at https://myssu.shawnee.edu/.
What is my User ID? This ID is assigned to you when you first apply at SSU and can be found on your Bear Card (student ID card) and all official communications from SSU.
What is my password? Your initial password is your date of birth. If you were born on May 23, 1989 your initial password will be 19890523. You are not required to change this password; however, it is strongly suggested that you change the password for the security of your personal information. If you have been using your MySSU account from home before arriving for Orientation, then you may have already change your password and need to continue using the password you were using at home.
Will this account be removed? This account is not deleted. The information you have access to may change, depending on your current role at SSU.
What is this account? This account provides you with email services. The account is supported by Shawnee State and hosted by Microsoft. The @MyMail account can be accessed at http://www.outlook.com/mymail.shawnee.edu
When is this created? The @MyMail account is created when you have been fully accepted to attend Shawnee State University.
What is my username? Your username is your last name + first name initial @MyMail.shawnee.edu. For example, Teresa Smith will be smitht@MyMail.shawnee.edu.
What is my password? Your initial one-time password will be shared via official communications from Shawnee State University. You will be prompted to change this password when you use this account for the first time. If you have been using your @MyMail email account before arriving for Orientation, you should have already changed your password and need to use the password you were using at home.
Will the account be removed? This email account will be removed if you do not become a registered student at SSU, if you are a student and you leave SSU for any reason other than graduation, or if SSU is ever directed to do so by Microsoft.
Your campus accounts have a password self-service reset feature that allows you to reset your password online if you forget it. To take advantage of this feature you must take a few moments and register for each account listed below. Once you have successfully completed the quick enrollment process you will be able to reset your passwords for these accounts without visiting the Service Desk. Keep in mind you must register your accounts BEFORE you forget your password – so take time to do it now.
You are now able to make use of the password self-recovery option for your Network Account. If you have forgotten your Network Password and have completed the registration process above, it can be reset from any lab computer on campus by clicking "Reset Password" from the login page. If you are off-campus, visit http://myid.shawnee.edu to reset the Network Account Password.
Once you have registered for the password reset feature, if you forget your password for MySSU, it can be reset by completing the steps below.

Please note: Student email is a service hosted by Microsoft®. Menu options are subject to change. SSU will notify you of changes in advance whenever possible.
Students are able to download the latest version of Microsoft Office by logging into Office 365 using their Shawnee State University email address and password. From the Office 365 dashboard you will see “Install Office” link. Click this link and select the option that is correct for you.
Students' academic work should never be saved to the hard drive of any University computer.
All students are given 30MB of storage in the My Documents folder of their network account. ITS suggests reserving this space for academic work instead of personal music or pictures. Documents that are saved in this folder are only available on campus and from University-owned computers and will be removed once your network account is removed.
Student academic work should be saved to a reliable USB flash drive or to the My Documents folder. It is recommended that students always save their work in two locations, creating a back-up to protect your work. This can be done using two USB drives, the My Documents folder, or any other web-based storage devices students may have.
SSU offers an emergency notification service called SSU Alert. This is provided to keep you informed in the event of an emergency or any University closure. Notifications can be received in a variety of forms including phone call, text message, and email message. To receive emergency notifications from this service you must register through MySSU. To enroll login to MySSU, go to the Emergency/SSU Alert link on the MyInfo tab, and provide your contact information for the methods you prefer.
Department of Public Safety has also launched Rave Guardian, a free mobile app that turns any smartphone into a personal safety device. By downloading this free safety app, students and faculty can enhance their personal safety both on and off campus. Wi-Fi connectivity in the campus housing units is supplied by Time Warner Cable and support is provided by a company called Wi-Fi Solutions Technology Group on their behalf. More information will be provided to University housing residents upon check-in regarding steps they need to take if they are experiencing issues with their internet connection within the residence halls.
IT Support Specialists at SSU can only work on personally-owned devices if the issue relates to wireless network connectivity or installation of software purchased through SSU. If your device is experiencing issues beyond these, our support specialists will not be able to provide assistance.

Students are reminded that sharing of copyrighted materials over the network such as software, music, images, videos, publications, or any other protected materials is a violation of federal copyright statutes and is strictly prohibited. Students who are cited in infringements notices under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) will have their SSU Network access suspended. Repeat violations will result in judicial referral. Violators may be subject to serious fines and penalties.
